Looking for Alaska
Alaska young
Alaska is the crazy girl miles falls deeply I love with when he first enters to Culver Creek. Alaska is gorgeous, clever, funny, impulsive, careless, indifferent, moody, emotional and the most beautiful girl miles has ever seen. She's a very flirtatious person, and she's constantly flirting with miles, even though she has a boyfriend. Alaska's sad past, including the death of her mother and feeling guilty because she didn't help her, has influenced a lot her present and that's why she is self destructive, moody and depressed. "Y'll smoke to enjoy it, I smoke to die"pg 44. This quote represents how unpredictable and unhappy she really is because her mood is drastically changing all the time.
Miles Halter
Miles is known as "Pudge" at Culver Creek because of his skinny body. He comes from Florida, where he was known for being quiet, shy and definitely not the popular type. Once he enters Culver Creek, he starts changing completely, becoming more social, outgoing, and learning how to drink, smoke and get in trouble. Miles's passion is learning the last words of famous people, he even prefers to read the biography of an author than actually reading his writing. "I go to seek a great perhaps" pg 5. This was Francois Rabelais's last words and probably, Miles favorite quote, because that is his main reason he wants to enter culver creek school, he wants a better and brighter future. Alaska is the girl miles falls in love with at first sight, she influences a lot of his decisions and forms of acting.
The Colonel
The Colonel, who's real name is Chip Martin, is a muscular, short, protective, sarcastic, humorous, leading figure, and a extremely intelligent person. Because of his advanced brilliant mind, he skipped several grades and has a full paid scholarship at Culver Creek. He is known as the leader in his group of friends and got the nickname of "The Colonel" for being the master head behind all the pranks they are constantly planning. The colonel comes from a poor background and his dad left when he was very young after cheating and beating up his mom. The most important quality, from The Colonel's perspective, is to be loyal, he does not believe in snitching or ratting anybody out, under any condition.
Takumi Hikohito
Takumi is a Japanese, shy character that makes part of the group of friends of the colonel and Alaska. He is very agile and fast, and is important in the story because he Helps the colonel and Alaska with their pranks. Takumi understands Alaska very well; he helps Miles to understand how moody Alaska is sometimes and to not take it personally. As a reader, I can tell that Takumi has feelings for Alaska, but he knows he can't have her. He is Avery mysterious character and is hard to figure out what he is feeling with his actions.
The Eagle
Mr. Starnes Is known as "The Eagle" by the students of Culver Creek. He is the dean of the institution, and because of his rude, mean, and boring attitude, many of the students dislike him. The eagle has a good relationship with Alaska and The Colonel, and even though, he is the one enforcing the discipline on students, he does not always punish everyone because he understands certain pranks. The eagle lives across Culver Creek and is the judge from the jury (where the non-expellable offenses are dealt with). He is very strict with some rules, like NOT drinking, because he doesn't want to let any harm happen.
